TRUSTED BY THESE WELL KNOWN BRANDS AND HUNDREDS MORE.
David Farrar enhanced several fine British films of the 1940s. Tall, good looking, with a mellow voice and attractive air of disdain, he made his name playing Sexton Blake in the 1930s. He is most associated with the idiosyncratic films of the great team of Powell and Pressburger: ‘Gone to Earth’ as a roguish squire who steals the heart of wild girl Jennifer Jones; ‘The Small Back Room’ where he is excellent as the maimed and self-hating bomb disposal expert. The defusing scene on the beach is one of the most gripping in any film. Best of all, in ‘Black Narcissus’, that outlandish tale in which he plays the local agent who has a disturbing effect on a group of nuns in their Himalayan retreat. Farrar had the credentials and potential to become a major Hollywood star. But he never took his work that seriously and was content to retire in his early fifties. He died in South Africa in 2005. |
